What is cholera?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cholera is "an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae" (see picture at right). The CDC estimates that 3-5 million cases and over 100,000 deaths related to cholera occur each year world-wide. Click here to read more about cholera.
