Clinical Research Associates, Inc., is seeking volunteers to participate in a stop smoking study. The study is 52 wks and involves 21 visits to our office. There is a 12-week treatment period comparing a research medication to placebo, proceeded by 40 weeks of follow-up to evaluate continuous abstinence.

Tobacco Smoking is by far the most important risk factor for obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) worldwide with as many as 50% of smokers developing COPD. Symptoms of COPD include breathlessness on exertion, coughing and production of phlegm. The mechanism involved in the development of COPD is not completely understood. The only treatment that has been shown to affect the decline in lung function is smoking cessation. Therefore, improvement in methods to help stop smoking is the greatest hope to COPD suffers.

To Qualify you must be:

• 35 years of age or older
• Motivated to Quit Smoking
• Smoking at least 10 cigarettes per day for the past year
• Experiencing symptoms of COPD
• Able to make frequent office appointments

Qualified participants will receive:

• Smoking counseling
• Study related physical exams & pulmonary function testing
• Study Medication 
• Compensation
